Welcome home, Puyol!

Tue, 13/07/2010 - 18:01

Our work here at El Refugio del Burrito is not only collecting donkeys, but researching new cases and offering our help. Last month we heard news of a donkey that had attacked 2 people whilst he was loose on a road called ‘Carretera de Santa Catalina’ in Murcia, he had bitten a woman on the face and arm and then later had attacked a man whilst he was trying to capture him. The donkey was eventually captured and then taken to the local pound where he had to stay until the owner was found.

Staff at El Refugio del Burrito have been eagerly waiting for the foaling of two pregnant mares, Romera and Romina, that were taken in last year from Cádiz.

Thu, 01/07/2010 - 12:50

Last weekend was a very special one here at ERB. A small bunch of volunteers from around the country gathered at our Fuente de Piedra farm to paint stables, and get them ready for our newcomers.

Early on Saturday morning, although already quite warm in the Spanish sunshine, they all got together, led by our General Manager, Iván.

Estrella is proud of her shape!

Wed, 09/06/2010 - 16:10

Think of a soft, brown little donkey in the shape of a lentil... and you have Estrella! To avoid further gossiping and endless questioning, this beautiful Riding Therapy donkey has decided to issue a press release to deny rumours that she is in foal: “No, I’m not pregnant” says donkey Estrella “I live in a paddock with another female, so it would be miraculous if I were! It’s just my shape that misleads people to think I am. I am getting tired of people judging me for the size of my belly. I am proud of my shape, it’s part of who I am. Besides, I’m a donkey, not a stick insect!

Toto, one of the Backstreet Boys!

Wed, 09/06/2010 - 16:08

Toto, one of our Riding Therapy trained donkeys, is glad winter is over, as this means he can exercise around his spacious paddock with his good friend Snooty. Both of them are known as “The Backstreet Boys”. They have earned the nickname thanks to the location of their paddock, at the very back of our Sanctuary, rather than their singing or dancing skills. Toto is a young, strong donkey who cannot wait to start his Riding Therapy duties again, as he enjoys being with the children nearly as much as he does playing with his friend Snooty.

Romero secures his place in Hall of Fame

Wed, 09/06/2010 - 16:07

Romero is the true star of El Refugio del Burrito, with astonishing good looks that send tingles up every female’s spine and the honour of being the very first donkey to ever come to us, he has secured a place at El Refugio’s Hall of Fame... and he knows it!

Being 28 already, he is in amazingly great shape. He enjoys a fuss from visitors, and is always ready to do his donkey cat walk for everyone to admire him... but there is one heart he has yet to conquer, and that is Estrella’s. Every time she walks past his paddock he just melts like butter!

León is an avid spectator!

Wed, 09/06/2010 - 16:05

With the coming of spring and good weather, Outdoor Sports season is on at Paddock 7. The minis enjoy popular sports such as Wellie Catch, Hoofball or Volley-rope. León, our very own mini heartthrob, has a different way of enjoying this. Rather than joining in the fray, León prefers to take a step back and watch while enjoying a bit of hay in the company of his female friends, María and Este. León is an avid spectator, cheering and braying as his colleagues compete just for the fun of it.

Erica has an air of mystery

Wed, 09/06/2010 - 16:03

Erica is probably the shyest donkey we have ever homed. That has not been an obstacle to make her immensely popular amongst supporters and visitors alike.

Maybe that air of mystery is what makes her so attractive. Always close to her good friend, Belén, lovely Erica enjoys her daily beauty sessions rolling on the ground before standing in the sun to maintain her unique tan.

One thing you will not see Erica do though, is get close to the fence and pose to have her picture tak... she may be beautiful and well groomed, but vain is one thing she is not!

El Refugio del Burrito condemns the Municipality of Santorini because of mistreatment of donkey taxis

Thu, 20/05/2010 - 17:07

In the blistering heat this summer on the Greek Island of Santorini, thousands of tourists will unload from vast cruise ships and be ferried ashore to a port which leads to the small town of Thira. The options of getting to the town located high above the port are either by cable car or donkey taxi, but because the cable car is quickly flooded by the tourists, a queue quickly builds for the donkeys and mules.

Over 200 of them have been tied up in the hot sun for hours waiting for the first of the tourists to arrive. There is a shelter and water available a little way up the steps (which lead up to Thira) but the owners choose not to rest the animals at this location as it’s not convenient for them.

Start: 03/05/2010 00:00 Timezone: Europe/Madrid Start: 03/05/2010 00:00 Timezone: Europe/Madrid

Alicia, our beautiful foal born last year's mothers day, after her mother Nana being rescued from extreme neglect, is one year old since the past 3rd of May, and we all have celebrated her first birthday at her loving home in Fuente de Piedra.

Farm staff had a little treat for her, a luscious birthday carrot cake. We want to wish her the happiest first birthday of many more we hope she'll enjoy here at El Refugio del Burrito.

She is a lucky donkey to have been born in a place where she has known love and care from day one.

The General Manager welcomes you

Mon, 17/05/2010 - 10:04

At last sunshine and good weather start filling the days, and the tourist, fairs and fiestas season is underway in many places around the country.

To our donkeys, this means an increase in their use and situations that may affect their welfare. We will be extremely busy over May and June. First of all, due to the celebration of El Rocío. During this massive pilgrimage, horses and mules are used to make the trip to the hermitage, and according to reports we have yet to verify, donkeys are rented out under no regulations, which may put them in a position where abuse or cruelty may occur.
