You can make a difference
Tue, 15/06/2010 - 10:51Please support us by making a donation.
Mossie was found in a dreadful state. His hooves were severely overgrown and he was covered in mud.
Despite all this, his faith in humans hadn’t been lost. When our welfare team found him, he was so friendly and happy to see people - it was heart warming.

Abandoned donkeys
Mon, 14/06/2010 - 16:18This year we have seen a massive increase in abandoned donkeys throughout the country. Some of these donkeys are fit and healthy but due to the economic situation have been left in fields and on the side of the road to fend for themselves. Others are in terrible condition with overgrown hooves, matted coats, skin conditions and sarcoids.

Tiffany and Noelie leave for new home in Co Mayo
Tue, 25/05/2010 - 09:58Tiffany and Noelie left this week for their new home in Westport, Co Mayo. There was a lot of work involved in getting these two ready for foster. First they had to be medically fit to make sure they were in tip top shape for their journey. Then our grooms and quality time volunteers worked tirelessly on them to make sure they would be social and easy to handle for their new fosterers - last minute checks are always taken to make sure all is well.

Three donkey foals lucky to be alive
Wed, 19/05/2010 - 12:22Three young foals called Tai, Jai and Kai came into our care last November along with another young foal after their owner tried to sell them at a fair in Co Galway. As the owner failed to sell them, a concerned donkey owner bought the foals because of the condition they were in. Since he was not in a position to keep the foals, he immediately contacted The Donkey Sanctuary and our Welfare team made arrangements for the foals to be collected.

Petition to stop the abuse of Donkey Taxis in Santorini
Mon, 17/05/2010 - 17:10The Donkey Sanctuary condemns the Municipality of Santorini because of mistreatment of donkey taxis. In the blistering heat this summer on the Greek Island of Santorini, thousands of tourists will unload from vast cruise ships and be ferried ashore to a port which leads to the small town of Thira. The options of getting to the town located high above the port are either by cable car or donkey taxi, but because the cable car is quickly flooded by the tourists, a queue quickly builds for the donkeys and mules.

Tiffany and Noelie
Tue, 04/05/2010 - 12:02Tiffany seen here on the right came to the Sanctuary in February 1997 along with 6 other donkeys that were left to starve in a field in Co Wexford. She was in very bad condition with overgrown hooves and very thin. It was subsequently discovered that she was in foal and in August 1997 she gave birth to a colt foal. We called this little fellow Noelie. Tiffany was a brilliant mother to Noelie and they became very close.

Tinsel on her way back to meet the public
Wed, 21/04/2010 - 12:29Many of you will remember our Christmas orphan who came into our care in December 2007. She was still trying to suckle her dead mother when our driver, Patrick Barrett Jnr, and veterinary nurse, Tina Buckley, collected her. It was decided to call her Tinsel as it was so near Christmas. They brought her back to the Sanctuary where she was bottle fed three hourly around the clock. She was loved by all the staff and thought Eileen Barrett was her surrogate mother, and to the amusement of our visitors, followed her around the yard and up the walkways during exercise time.

Lizzy and Cohan happy in 'The Oldie Group'
Thu, 08/04/2010 - 09:42Lizzy was rescued by a very kind lady from Co Mayo in 2008; she was in a terrible state and was near death. This lady brought her back to health and put Lizzy with her own donkeys where she subsequently got pregnant and gave birth to a foal called Cohan in May 2009. However it became clear that Lizzy needed specialist care so it was decided to relinquish Lizzy and Cohan to the Sanctuary in June 2009.
