105th donkey is a foal

A new foal has been born this month at Fondazione Il Rifugio degli Asinelli O.N.L.U.S. She is the 105th donkey to be cared for by the charity which officially opens on Saturday 22nd August 2009.

The parents of the foal, which was born on Tuesday 11th August, have been homed at the centre from Valli di Lanzo (Lanzo Valley) since December as they were suffering with severe problems with their hooves and they were covered in parasites.

Doctor Luca Merlone, who has been treating the donkeys says: "The foal is an absolute delight. She weighs almost 35kg and is a beautiful, playful young lady and I'm sure the visitors will agree that she is just simply adorable."

Her mum, Maria, didn't need any help with the birth - we are all so proud of her. Maria and dad, Jonny, have both made a full recovery from their previous illness, they all make a wonderful family."

Children at the official opening of the centre will have the opportunity to name the foal. The winner will receive a year's free adoption of the foal.

Other attractions on the day include a number of games including a treasure hunt. But the main focus will be on all 105 donkeys!
