Open day - 22nd August 2009

Over 1,000 visitors and members of the local authorities attended the official opening of a local donkey rescue centre, Fondazione Il Rifugio degli Asinelli O.N.L.U.S. (IRDA), on Saturday 22nd August 2009.

The activities which were arranged for the whole family by the charity were a great success.

Barbara Massa, general manager of IRDA, says: "It was so nice to welcome visitors through the gates who were here to support our work.

"It was lovely to see families having a good time and all the donkeys enjoyed the extra fuss and attention – it was a great day!

"60 children took part in the treasure hunt in which donkey related questions were asked. Mums and dads were also keen to join in the fun in the hope of winning a free adoption of a donkey.

"More than 200 children and adults enjoyed the open space and games provided, whilst a two year old child happily selected the name of our new foal in a naming competition. The new foal is called Trilly. In the grooming area children also learnt about basic donkey care and welfare and how to brush a donkey with the correct equipment."

Local journalists and two television companies also attended the event.

Fondazione Il Rifugio degli Asinelli O.N.L.U.S. is now open every day from 11am to 6pm in the summer and 11am to 4pm in the winter. For further information telephone 015 2551828 or visit www.ilrifugiodegliasinelli.org
