Theo's overgrown hooves

Diseases of and problems with hooves are common amongst donkeys. Daily care and cleaning, as well as a balanced diet, will help avoid these problems.

  • Get to know your donkey's hooves. Inspect and clean them daily removing any mud, manure or stones.
  • Keep stables as clean and dry as possible. Give donkeys access to pastures or well-drained areas, avoid muddy fields.
  • Encourage regular light exercise especially during the winter. You'll both benefit from a nice walk!
  • Don't let hooves grow too long! Find a farrier who will visit your animals every 6 to 10 weeks. If your donkey suffers from problems with his hooves you can ask the farrier to visit more frequently.
