A foal is born

Sheila and Filippo

On Tuesday 6th May 2008, a beautiful little foal was born to one of the 21 donkeys rescued from Romania with help from Save the Dogs and Other Animals. His name is Filippo.

The story of Filippo's mum is quite sad. Sheila was found in a field with her belly opened by a knife and she had probably been there all night. She was taken to the Save the Dogs and Other Animals centre in Cernavodă in Romania and once there she underwent a very difficult surgical operation. More than 60 stitches were given internally and externally. Sheila's life was saved and that of her unborn foal.

Once Sheila was given the all clear to travel, she was moved to our sanctuary in Italy. On arrival, Sheila was quite a nervous donkey, but slowly over time we have gained her confidence.

She is now a very proud mother of her adorable son, Filippo.
