It is with a heavy heart and a great sorrow that we have to inform you that Rufus, the painted donkey of our adoption scheme, was put to sleep due to deterioration of his health.
He had been under therapy for a type of growth known as a sarcoid for a very long time; after several operations over the years to remove the sarcoids many new ones appeared that could not be removed or treated.
Unfortunately, due to their position, they were causing him pain and discomfort and so, after long discussions with our vet, we made the heartbreaking decision to gently put him to sleep. We had tried everything possible but in the end Rufus’ illness didn’t allow him to live a proper life anymore.
Rufus was rescued in Switzerland when he was 3 year old: he was destined to the meat market. From the very first time he showed his friendly attitude towards other donkeys and people and it took just a little time for him to become one of the most loved donkeys at IRDA. His special coat, with dark brown spots on white, was particularly appreciated by children and he didn’t care at all if some of them confused him with a cow. He loved playing and making jokes and we guess that he would have laughed for these misunderstandings as well.
Rufus will be greatly missed and none of us will ever forget his courage and vitality despite his long fight with cancer. We all thank our supporters for adopting Rufus very much and for enabling us to do everything we could for him.
