To celebrate Valentine's Day, we would like to introduce you four special friends. Their names are Sogno, Baby, Magilla e Cesare: this is their story...
Once upon a time... there was a big, white horse: he looked like a fairytale’s horse and for that reason he was called Sogno, “Dream”.
He was born in Argentina; one day, over 20 years ago, he was captured and put on a ship to Italy with many other horses, destined to meat market or to riding schools.
Sogno was pretty and quiet and that was his luck: he was chosen as riding-school horse. Always closed in his stable, he only got out to be ridden: children and adults, kind or indifferent people alternated on his back. Pampas was only a pale memory.
One day, Sogno started to cough: maybe the dust in his stable or improper cares, or... who knows. One thing was sure: the riding school owner didn’t take long to decide he was useless. Sogno was destined to the meat market and this time nothing seemed apt to save him.
But... a lady knew his story. She didn’t care if he was perfectly healthy or he could not have been ridden anymore. So, she rescued him.
Sogno’s life changed so much! He lived on the top of a hill now, sorrounded by fields and woods. He got good food, cares and love: everything a horse could desire. Everything but... one thing: a friend to share that gorgeous life with.
And then, that friend arrived! But she wasn’t a horse... she was a pretty, lively donkey instead. Her name was Baby and it was love at first sight. It was gorgeous to see them together: he was tall and shy, she was short and bright; he silent and calm, she always ready to bray. Everywhere Baby went, Sogno was on her side. You couldn’t find two creatures most different, yet so in love.
After ten years, another donkey arrived: she was called Magilla and was pregnant. At first, Baby and Sogno were a bit distrustful; but everything changed the night that Magilla gave birth to her foal Cesare! Baby and Sogno were there, looking at that precious moment: and little Cesare saw them just a second after his mum, so he considered all of them his family. And that they’ve always been: a big, multicolour and multiracial family!
So, when some months ago their owner had to leave Italy, she looked for a new home for all of them together. As you know, Il Rifugio takes care of donkeys, mules and hinnies, not of horses: but it wouldn’t be possible to divide Sogno from his donkey friends, neither fair. So, we decided to home him too. Some weeks ago, our Staff went to rescue all the groups. Magilla, Cesare and Sogno entered the trailer without hesitation; only Baby ran away for a while, maybe to greet the place where she spent many serene years. But then she saw her friends on the trailer looking at her and she went there too. She couldn’t have left her family to leave without her for any reason! So, the four of them arrived at Il Rifugio: a big old white horse, a high-spirited donkey, a sweet shy donkey mum and her grown-up foal. Maybe it’s not such a common “family”, but you can bet that all the differences disappear in front of the affection they feel for each others.
If you were able to write anb happy ending to Sogno, Baby, Magilla and Cesare's story, it's thanks to our supporters, who even in these hard times never missed to help us.
Thank you all for the love you've always showed to our donkeys! Happy Valentine's Day.
