Updates on Sole: more improvements!
Posted on 26 July 2019.Slow, but unstoppable, Sole continues to improve: it is a joy for us to update you on Sole, the donkey with a very serious dermatitis that we recovered at our sanctuary a month ago after, for two years, the former owners had tried in vain to discover the causes of his problems.
As you probably read in ourupdate email (if you are not yet subscribed to the newsletter, you can do it now), thanks to blood tests, skin biopsy and a full allergy screening, our veterinarian Dr. Merlone has verified that he is allergic to grass (for this reason he has no access to free pasture, but only to selected hay) and to some types of cereals: he is allergic to barley straw, for example, but not to wheat straw, which we are using for his bed.
His progress
This arrangement, combined with the beginning of medical therapy, has already brought some visible improvements: his hair has already regrown in different areas, no new wounds have opened and the old ones, which we are treating, are less deep and in the process of recovery.
"During his treatments, Sole is cautious, but always calm and confident" explains Magda, one of the groom who takes care of him every day. "He follows us and, above all, it devours with taste the medicine that helps him to feel better".
Among the next steps, there will be the evaluation of an 'ad hoc' diet; symptomatic therapy will continue to alleviate dermatitis and will soon begin to be treated with custom-made desensitizing treatments.
The maintenance phase will last for at least 2 years and the estimated cost (hyposensitizing therapy, symptomatic treatment in autumn, exams, special hay and more) will be at least € 3,500 - another € 1,376 have already been spent initially, between visits and specialist examinations.
Seeing the improvements of the Sun, however, makes us understand that the road is the right one and encourages us to always go forward: are you with us?
