5X1000: Filippo's story

Just like Filippo: his story started in Romania, where his mum Sheila was found with a deep knife wound all over her belly. The situation was still more serious because she was already in foal.

Thanks to the prompt rescue by the local base of The Donkey Sanctuary and an emergency surgery, Sheila's life was saved and after recovery she was moved to our Italian shelter, where she gave birth to a lovely foal.

Filippo grew up happy and healthy: he spent all of his time playing with Clementina, an adorable filly who was born just a couple of weeks before him.

Sadly, when Filippo was just 2, our staff discovered a sarcoid (skin tumor) over his eye.

A first surgery to remove the sarcoid was followed by years of treatments and exams to monitor his health. They are very expensive, but at the same time they are also essential to keep our donkeys in good health and to help

Then... the smile of our vet and the words we were longing to hear: Filippo was finally healed!

When we moved him into the group of healthy donkeys, it didn't take more than a couple of seconds for him and Clementina to find each other.
