Dental health is important for everyone, not just for humans: did you know that our donkeys have a dental check at least once a year?

Some teeth can grow in an abnormal way, or in the wrong position, preventing proper feeding.

Sometimes bad teeth need to be extracted.

As age increases, checks become more and more important, because the chances of dental issues increase as well.

In the elderly donkeys the development of sharp spikes is quite common: they can injure tongue and cheeks, donkeys feel pain during meals, cannot chew food properly and, as a consequence, problems of malnutrition, weight loss, colics can rise.

Starting from 18-20 years, donkey teeth stop growing and they keep on being consumed, until only the roots remain: sometimes they must be removed to prevent infection.

But, fortunately, we can help the donkeys and avoid or at least limit dental damages: our vet, specialized in dentistry, schedules regular annual inspections (or more frequent, if needed) to make sure that the donkeys can chew properly and to avoid problems related to malnutrition.
