Mimì and Rucola's love story
Posted on 30 January 2020.Mimì and Rucola were born at the Refuge a few years ago. They are two young donkeys, who have not known the suffering and uncertainty of many of our other guests (read the story of Dante and Margherita here). Yet even if born in a protected context, their mothers come from complicated backgrounds. Giorgina, Mimì's mother, arrived at the Rifugio from Veneto and was so undernourished that we didn't realize that she was pregnant. Surprisingly, we watched her belly grow in the weeks following her arrival at the Rifugio. Mimì was born in 2016. On a very ordinary morning we found her on the straw, pampered by her mother. Rucola was also born here at the refuge in 2014. She is the daughter of Greta, another donkey with a very unhappy past.
Unfortunately Greta and Giorgina are no longer close to their daughters today and Mimì and Rucola have made a special bond between them. They met a few years ago when they lived in the same area. Who knows what are the paths that push donkeys, mules and hinnies to form couples. But, perhaps, don't we humans ask ourselves the same question? Mimì and Rucola, both without her mothers, are taking care of each other.
Mimì follows Rucola wherever she goes, because Rucola is the "adult" one who opens the way and reassures. Like when a veterinarian intervention is needed. A few weeks ago we had to isolate Rucola in the VET area. A small injection, but Mimi has always been present, next to her, inspecting the area to make sure that everything ran smoothly. How could we not take a picture of this moment?
Stories like Mimì and Rucola are only possible because of your help. This Valentine's Day help us continue to offer care and shelter to all the other donkeys and mules in difficulty. Your gesture can make the difference.
