Seizure in Alessandria, updates 8/2: results of exams and next steps
Posted on 8 February 2019.They are more and more comfy in their new home, the five donkeys that we brought here last week from Alessandria seizure. We are doing and will do our best so that they can forget their difficult past and start a new life. Besides a safe and warm shelter, healthy food and many, well-deserved attention from our dedicated staff, in order to get them back on track they also need more: medical therapies and customised interventions.
The morning after their arrival, our vet, Dr. Luca Merlone, visited Minto, Silvio, Bruno, Moro and Zara, so that we could immediately start the treatments for the most obvious problems: parasites, wounds, nasal and ocular secretions. In parallel, blood samples were taken to get an accurate picture of their overall situation: "Blood tests indicate an altered metabolic pattern in all five donkeys, as was conceivable considering feeding problems - too poor /non-existent before, too rich after" says Dr. Merlone. Here at our sanctuary, for each of them, a tailor-made diet was designed, in order to rebalance the blood values.
It will take a very long time to bring the hooves to their full functionality, expecially for the two donkeys in worst conditions, Zara (Moro's mum) and Silvio.
"The results of the X-ray on Silvia confirm the presence of osteo-articular lesions as a consequence of the previous lack of care" explains Dr. Merlone. "About Silvio: there is a chronic inflammation of the internal structures of the foot, but - fortunately - to an extent not irreversible yet: with appropriate farrier interventions we should be able to obtain an improvement or at least block the degenerative process ".
The costs for treatments are very high: we thank you for the generosity shown so far and remind you that if you want to help us with the costs, you can make a donation of any amount, also through fundraising on Facebook. Every help counts!
