One year ago, our Welfare officer Fabrizio Massa received a complain about two donkeys, living with a mare and two ponies in a town in the Alps, Bardonecchia.

All of them had awful hooves and the area where they lived was dirty and unhealthy.

Almost 38,000 kilos of food have been delivered as a response to the emergency caused by the tragic mix of extraordinary snowfall and earthquake which hit Central Italy.

A first shipment of nearly 25,000 kilos of food were sent a few days ago on the initiative of The Donkey Sanctuary in collaboration with World Horse Welfare and our Rifugio: last Saturday our supplier Cristiano drove from Cuneo to Abruzzo (750 km) to deliver 19.5 tonne of hay and straw; and yesterday 5,000 more kilos of forage were brought in addition to the Storage Centre in Teramo.

The EU’s top equine welfare organisations have welcomed the adoption of a key initiative by the European Parliament’s Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee today, which they believe could help to lift equine welfare across Europe to new levels.
